Lou Correa — Democrat Candidate for U.S. House in California, 2026
Last updated: March 4, 2026
Lou's Positions on Key Issues
Economy
HighRepresentative Lou Correa voted for a measure to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies, aiming to prevent skyrocketing health insurance costs for families. He also voted in favor of H.R. 7006, the Appropriations Minibus, to fund government operations and protect small businesses from proposed domestic cuts. His actions indicate a focus on supporting families and small businesses by managing healthcare expenses and avoiding reductions in federal funding for key programs.
“Today, I voted to extend critical Affordable Care Act subsidies so hardworking families on Main Street aren’t left with skyrocketing health insurance costs they simply can’t afford." Lou Correa, press release, January 08, 2026.”
Immigration
HighLou Correa voted against the GOP-led SAVE America Act, calling it redundant and a form of voter suppression that complicates voting for citizens. He also opposed federal funding for DHS and ICE, citing concerns that ICE has become a "paramilitary organization" whose practices terrorize communities. Correa advocates for comprehensive immigration reform, supports DREAMers, and seeks to protect new Americans, emphasizing fair treatment and access to legal advice for immigrants.
““I’m for prioritizing Americans, but I’m also for being fair with those who have worked really hard that don’t have any documents. And that’s, I think, where I kind of draw the line," Correa said. "What’s wrong with thanking those that work hard — all those immigrants who are in the military — why don’t you thank them?" - Lou Correa, Fox News, February 24, 2026.”
Healthcare
HighLou Correa voted for a Democratic measure to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, aiming to keep healthcare costs down for American taxpayers. He stated that these subsidies are crucial to prevent skyrocketing health insurance costs and ensure families can afford coverage. Additionally, he voted against a GOP budget plan, citing concerns that it would cut Medicaid and Medicare benefits for children, seniors, and veterans, jeopardizing healthcare access for many in his district.
““Today, I voted to extend critical Affordable Care Act subsidies so hardworking families on Main Street aren’t left with skyrocketing health insurance costs they simply can’t afford. Since enhanced premium tax credits expired on January 1, 2026, millions of Americans, including nearly 1.7 million Californians, are already facing steep premium increases averaging nearly 100% more than last year without the enhanced subsidies, pricing many out of the health coverage they rely on. [...] Extending these subsidies is about keeping health care affordable for the people who work hard, play by the rules, and deserve peace of mind. I look forward to the swift passage of this extension by the U.S. Senate and its prompt signing into law by the President so we can deliver real, tangible relief to the families who need it most.” — Representative Lou Correa (CA-46), Press Release, January 08, 2026”
Climate & Energy
HighLou Correa voted for the Affordable HOMES Act, which aims to make manufactured homes more affordable and streamline regulatory processes for energy efficiency. He supports keeping manufactured homes affordable and energy-efficient for working families, believing that reducing red tape around energy efficiency standards can help lower homeownership costs.
“We are living through an affordable housing crisis. We should be working on bringing costs of homeownership down, not fighting about complicated energy efficiency standards,” Correa said. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Let’s let housing experts do their jobs without introducing more red tape.””
Abortion & Reproductive Rights
HighLou Correa supports abortion rights, stating the decision should rest with the woman in consultation with her doctor. He expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court's draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, advocating against women returning to unsafe medical procedures. He believes that to reduce abortions, additional healthcare and childcare resources should be provided. He hopes the Senate will pass legislation to codify Roe v. Wade, which the House has already approved.
““Roe v Wade: the basic issue is who makes the decision: the government, or the woman in consultation with her doctor and her God. Roe v Wade stands for the woman making that decision. If this leaked draft opinion is true, then it is disappointing and will overturn 49 years of legal precedent. I don’t want to see women return to clandestine medical procedures. If we really want to reduce the incidences of abortion, then we should provide additional healthcare and resources such as childcare to women facing that decision so that they can make the decision to keep the child. The House has already passed the law to codify Roe v Wade. It now sits on the Senate floor. It is my hope that the Senate pass this legislation and present it to President Biden for his signature.” — Congressman Lou Correa, Statement on Supreme Court's Draft Decision to Overturn Roe v Wade.”
Foreign Policy
HighLou Correa voted against federal funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), arguing that ICE had strayed from its founding mission to protect Americans from foreign terrorists and had become a paramilitary organization. He also voted "Nay" on H.R. 185, a bill that sought to terminate the COVID-19 vaccination requirement for foreign travelers, indicating support for maintaining public health measures for entry into the United States.
““Today, the House voted on government funding legislation that included a two-week continuing resolution to fund DHS and ICE—setting aside any guardrails that might exist and giving the Department the greenlight to continue business as usual terrorizing our communities. ICE has become a paramilitary organization that has arrested American citizens, collected biometric information of American citizens, assaulted American citizens, and killed American citizens. The agency has strayed far from its founding mission to protect Americans from foreign terrorists. I will continue to oppose funding for DHS and ICE.” — Lou Correa, Press Release, February 03, 2026”
Education
LowLou Correa is deeply committed to the future of the country, viewing education as fundamental to that future. He actively advocates for legislation that increases resources for all students to help more people attend college and achieve their full academic potential. Additionally, he supported the new GI Bill, which aims to provide higher education opportunities for a new generation of veterans.
Gun Policy
HighRepresentative Lou Correa voted against H.R. 2243, the LEOSA Reform Act of 2025, which would have expanded concealed carry rights to off-duty and retired law enforcement in schools and other sensitive areas. He supports retired public safety officers being able to conceal carry for public safety, but opposes the lack of restrictions on concealed carry in schools within that bill. Correa stated he would support the legislation if it were amended to include such restrictions.
“I support our retired public safety officers being able to conceal carry and their ability to step in during times of crisis to protect public safety,” Correa said. “However, this legislation would allow off-duty and retired law enforcement to carry guns in schools and other sensitive areas. Due to there being no restriction on concealed carry in schools, I voted ‘no.’ Should this legislation be amended in the future to include this restriction, I would support it.””
